Webinar Summary
In response to the San Bruno pipeline explosion in 2010, the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) introduced a set of rules, collectively known as the “Gas Mega Rule”, which require pipeline operators to verify material properties of all their onshore gas pipelines by July 2035. As a result, pipeline operators have developed a need for non-destructive testing (NDT) technologies to help them meet the requirements of this new regulation. One such technology is MMT’s Hardness, Strength, and Ductility (HSD) tester which utilizes frictional sliding to non-destructively evaluate a pipe’s yield strength (YS) and ultimate tensile strength (UTS). This webinar will discuss how frictional sliding was developed and validated as a reliable method to determine the YS and UTS of pipes, how it is used to determine the specific type of welding process used for electric resistance welded (ERW) pipes, how it is utilized to determine seam toughness, and the overall NDT process to provide operators with complete records of their pipelines. Additionally, the future developments in in-ditch material verification technologies will be covered.

Presenter Biography
Mindaugas Vaisys received his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. After spending 6 years in the electrical power distribution equipment manufacturing field, Mindaugas joined MMT in 2021 as a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer. Currently he leads the manufacturing activities related to the Hardness, Strength, and Ductility (HSD) tester and is helping the development of a portable steel toughness tester.
